Geisha Takeji (竹治) of the Yanagibashi geisha district in Tokyo, dressed in the Genroku style, her hairdo is known as the karawa-mage or “wheel (ring) of Tang”, after the Chinese Tang dynasty (618-907). In Japan, this hairstyle was exclusively used by courtesans and actresses of the early women’s Kabuki theatre. One of the many medieval hairstyles revived by geisha in Tokyo, shortly after the end of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905).
